Project Kosmos is one man's voyage to visit them all--faster than anyone has ever done it in history. Starting 2024, join Michael as he races across the globe to break the world record. But there's more.

Tbilisi is like that girl you dated who never wore makeup but was still the most attractive in the room. It’s all about confidence. The historic city exudes an old world European charm with a sophisticated yet unpretentious populous. Young teens dress in the latest fashions, cafes burst with people, and the nightlife extends to the wee hours.

No visit to Tbilisi is complete without a trip higher up. Being in the mountains, overlooking the desperately beautiful autumn landscape, is an antidote for any ache or worry that you might have.

Though the country is deeply religious, most adhering to the Orthodox Christian Church, Georgians have a counter-culture streak in them. Browsing street art and boutique stores gives you a sense that people are politically savvy.

Hours before my flight out, I attended a demonstration two hundred thousand strong against the current political regime. What direction the country will go now remains unclear but it’s hard to deny that something is happening in Georgia.

Entirely centrally planned, built out of Italian white marble, and glow-in-the-dark, the capital of Turkmenistan is the most surreal city I’ve ever seen. Like video games of the early 2000’s that built lavish worlds but forgot the NPCs, Turkmenistan planned for a population boom that never came. The city is spotless and the double-wide roads bear little traffic. School is free, there’s very little crime, and everyone nominally has a job.

Though the city itself is new, the Turkmen culture dates back thousands of years. The people are extremely proud of their hospitality, their political neutrality, and their beautiful horses. They even have a Ministry to track the lineage of their special Turkmen breed.

My love of freedom might shudder at the notion, but what they told you about Turkmenistan isn’t entirely true. Of course, you can buck convention when you’re the world’s fourth largest oil producer, but that’s a topic for a different video.

Before arriving, I wouldn’t have been able to give you three facts about Kyrgyzstan. I certainly would’ve had trouble spelling it. But once I left Bishkek, Central Asia was further solidified as one of my favorite regions in the world.

After the fall of the Soviet empire and the opening of its borders, few people outside of the region had a mind to visit. I’m starting to develop a pattern that countries most often off the map are the ones most worth going to.

Just as with the rest of Central Asia, you experience the best of it through the most simple interactions. Walk through a market and vendors will stuff you full of food. Prance through a park, you might catch a chess match.
The people themselves are quiet but straight-forward who flash genuine smiles which actually mean something when you see them. There are no pretensions and no artificial flavors—just raw, delicious Kyrgyz goodness.

I was told by countless locals that the real beauty exists in the Kyrgyz outdoors, far away from the city. Next time I visit, and there will be a next time, I know exactly where I will go.

With a Soviet past and resource rich lands, Kazakhstan never bothered much to promote itself as tourist destination but after visiting, it feels like I’ve found a buried treasure.

In fact, autumn in Kazakhstan is emblematic of the criminally unappreciated beauty of the entirety of Central Asia. The air is crisp but not cold. Its vast landscape turns a multitude of painterly colors, accented by a skyline of stately, snow capped mountains.

Around this time families stroll through parks, bundled up in jackets. Markets bustle with seasonal produce shopping. Outdoorsman spend their time climbing up the surrounding mountains.

The Kazakh come from nomadic stock, preferring their independence and a closeness to nature. It’s a lifestyle I love, in weather I’m used to. Ah, Kazakhstan. Very nice.

Twenty years ago, the World Trade Center fell and Afghanistan was thrust onto the world stage again after a brief period of domestic peace in the late 90s. Growing up, us kids would evoke the name Kabul alongside Gotham City or Endor, in almost a fantastical way, never imagining the possibility of actually going there.

Now, overlooking the actual city of Kabul, with only a slightly less naive view of the world, I told my guide this. I knew he was a boy at the same time I was, yet instead of a disassociated fairytale, he saw the stacks of bodies outside his window.

The Taliban is back and the country is as it was before the war. What has changed? I really don’t know.

Afghanistan has been treated as a backwater, a strategic border, a land for plunder, and a battlefield in the struggle for ideologies. After having been there, I also see it as someone’s home.

This is Zacharia, who recalls a time when he had a dream job.

And Abdul, who had twin boys.

When I thought of Pakistan before my visit, I thought India plus Islam. Time to make fun of me again because I was so very wrong. While India brought me the warm familiarity of being home, I enjoyed Pakistan just as much but for totally different reasons. And of course, it begins and ends with people.

After crossing the famous Wagah border and driving across the entire country, the gradient of faces I saw became a photographer’s wet dream. What’s more is that for such a massive country, somehow everyone took the time to treat me as an honored guest, buying me delicious food, tea, gifts, and totally legal recreational drugs!

Merely sitting down on a bench would gather colorful characters who wished to discuss topics ranging from the fundamentals of Islam to American politics. Everyone, and I mean everyone, wanted to ensure I loved their country without any expectation for person gain.

And you know what? I did.

This is Mahir, who saw the true face of his father.

And introducing Abbas, who helped his mother visit Mecca.

Dhaka is the most intense city I’ve visited. Even with the help of my new acquaintances, traversing the urban madness requires fortitude.

From the moment I leave my hotel, all things persecute both peace and privacy. First I’m dodging people on the sidewalk, then rickshaws and motorcycles on a street turned war-zone where gaining a hundred meters is a victory. Apocalyptic sirens emanate from the heavens and all the while, the lurid funk of fermented garbage slithers through the smog and up my nose.

Much like Manila, the end point is usually worth the sojourn, rewarding you with a tasty meal, a pretty temple, or good company.

Look, this ain’t a city for everyone, maybe not even for me, but to experience Dhaka is to understand what it’s like to live in a place so densely populated, merely to breathe is a butterfly effect. Yet the unassuming Bangladeshi makes his way, and every time he does, it is a small miracle. After coming here, I can’t take anything for granted, especially those small moments of peace.

The tiny Kingdom of Bhutan has deliberately walled off rapid globalization in favor of protecting what it sees as the most critical need for human beings: happiness. This prescriptive measure may charm some, may startle others, just as you might view your traditions natural, your neighbor’s backwards, and those in a distant land, quaint. This is not a utopia and the people here whispered their own serious concerns to me in private, but I was already entranced.

Bhutan is a cup that is neither full nor empty. Like being stranded in the Himalayas themselves, what you have is only what you bring with you. She forces you to reconcile your insufficient views of the world with experiences of the in between. They are neither here, nor there, modern, nor antiquated, black nor white.

Bhutan contrasts our unyielding quest for what we think is progress, leaving us aching for the things we never knew we had lost. Questions will arise like:

Why retain tradition?

Can one man rule justly?

Is ignorance bliss?

And what is progress?

Then when your mind quiets, you may find the very best parts of humans, not as 21st century schizoid men, but as natural ingredients of the world, pure in flavor and color.

I wept when I left this place, because there is nowhere else like it.

Oh Nepal, how I long to stay…just a bit longer?

Touching down by plane, dramatic mountains all around, offers a prelude of the natural and cultural beauty you are yet to encounter in the country.

In Nepal, a connection to the past is ever present. So much feels old, but not tired. Stopping by a thousand year old temple on the way to work or the market is commonplace since antiquity is sprinkled haphazardly around Kathmandu like breadcrumbs on the carpet

Unlike Judeo-Christian religions, spirituality isn’t clearly demarcated here. It’s hard to know when the Hindu ends and the Buddhist begins, the two entangled in a twisted knot of roots with twin trees growing upward together.

There’s something similar building within me, an amalgamation of beliefs and traditions and philosophies collected across the world within a single mind struggling for coherence.

In other words, whenever I die, bury me with a tray of momos. (Shot of me with momo tray)
